The former brownfield site that was an unused GKN factory has been transformed into a store that replaces the smaller Lidl on the junction of Hamstead Road and Old Wallsall Road.
The new build is a steel frame structure with external finishes, with solar panels installed on the roof to increase the energy efficiency of the development, which will have a BREEAM Very Good standard.
We undertook a watching brief on UXO when conducting ground works because the area was bombarded during the Blitz in World War II. Lidl’s planning statement noted: “Lidl is a popular shopping destination for local residents in Hamstead, however, its current store is now too small to meet the demand of its customers.”
“Lidl therefore wishes to operate from a larger and more modern store, designed in keeping with the Company’s latest format.”
Besides an enhanced customer experience, the new store will bring several job opportunities to the community once it opens.
