Double award win for Sandstone Court

11 November, 2024

A £12.3 million Extra Care scheme, constructed with sustainability at its core, is celebrating winning a pair of major industry awards.

Sandstone Court in Telford was named Residential Development of the Year and won the prize for Excellence in Sustainable Construction at the National Federation of Builders (NFB) Construction Awards of Excellence 2024.

The three-storey building, which includes 70 purpose-built apartments, was delivered by Coventry-based construction firm Deeley Construction, in partnership with Housing 21.

In addition to accommodation on all three floors, Sandstone Court features a residents’ lounge, a café/bistro, a hair salon and communal gardens. The café and hair salon are used by the wider local community as well as Sandstone Court residents.

It was the third development the Deeley Construction had delivered in partnership with Housing 21.

Deeley Construction, its subcontractors and architects rg+p worked collaboratively to design the building which, at the time, was on the cusp of the incoming new Part L Building Regulations.

The new Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing engineering (MEP) building design used for Sandstone Court focused on removing gas boilers from the development, relying instead on panel heaters and natural air ventilation systems.

By utilising the expertise of its Design Management team and energy consultants, Deeley Construction was able to coordinate the team’s resources, deliver the building above building regulations and in a way that complied with the company’s zero carbon agenda.

Jake Bishop, site manager, was also highly commended in the Rising Star category due to his role in assisting the implementation of the company’s new Lean Construction ethos, ensuring all schemes are delivered ‘The Deeley Way’. Jake was also a site manager for the double-award winning Sandstone Court scheme and joined by members of the project team to celebrate the occasion.

Martin Gallagher, Managing Director at Deeley Construction, said: “We’re incredibly proud to have come away with two awards on the night for Sandstone Court and also to have seen Jake receive much-deserved recognition for his work over the last few years.

“With the standard of competition at the NFB awards, it’s an honour to win one award, let alone two for the same development.

“These awards are testament to the strength of our partnership with Housing 21 and we will continue to work with our partners to bring forward high-quality and sustainable developments.”

Jamie Lindon-Lewis, Head of Extra Care at Housing 21, said: “We are incredibly proud of Sandstone Court and the difference it is making to the lives of our residents. The Extra Care scheme provides high quality and safe homes for over 70 residents. A huge thank you to Deeley’s for a positive partnership.”
