We have delivered the refurbishment of the Herbert Art Gallery to prepare it for hosting the world-renowned Turner Prize in Coventry’s City of Culture 2021 year.
We completed works to create an additional gallery and refurbished three existing galleries, as well as the ground floor area and restrooms.
The most challenging aspect of the project was conducting our works in close proximity to the art pieces. We therefore closely monitored the activity of all of our subcontractors to ensure we complied with agreed processes and rules set by the art specialists from the gallery.
We liaised on a daily basis with the Gallery’s duty manager and the art curators to ensure works progressed smoothly. The team was happy with the liaison established with the subcontractors, and they didn’t encounter any issues while working in this sensitive environment.
The project was due to be completed on the 22nd of January, but at the client requested additional works to be undertaken during the project.
We therefore provided value engineering options and a revised programme to undertake:
- refurbishment to the restrooms, the cafe and shop situated on the ground floor, completed early March 2021
- refurbishment to the external cafe patio area including new blinds, benches and cleaning, completed end of April 2021
As part of the City of Culture 2021 event, the Herbert Gallery will host the internationally renowned Turner Prize. The exhibition will run from September 29, 2021 through to January 12, 2022 with the announcement of the winner taking place on December 1, 2021. It is the first time in its near 40-year history that it has been staged in the West Midlands.
